The federal government has announced a temporary pause to the popular Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program for 2020. The program will not be accepting new applications at this point. The Program usually opens for application once a year, which is often in January.

According to the Ministerial Instructions on Parents and Grandparents announced on the IRCC website:

“These temporary instructions are intended to ensure that as of January 1, 2020, no permanent resident visa applications made by parents or grandparents of a sponsor and no sponsorship applications made in relation to those applications are accepted for processing until further Instructions are issued.”

The announcement says that this is to allow sufficient time to “complete the development of a new application intake management process for the parents and grandparents sponsorship program, to be implemented in 2020.”

According to the website, more details are expected on the new intake management process by April 1, 2020 at the latest and that no new applications will be accepted until the new process is implemented.
