VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – People often see Canada as a pretty good place to live; many in other parts of the world make it a goal to move here.

A new poll surveyed Chinese British Columbians about how they view certain qualities of life.

Weather and political freedom are among the qualities most of those asked saw as a lot better or somewhat better than in their home country.

But Steve Mossop with Insights West says overall, only 33 per cent saw cost of living as being better here.

“When you go down the list and look at things such as restaurant dining or their financial situation — cost of living — we find that there’s a switch and we see that the feelings are that the home country is actually better.”

About 39 per cent said job opportunities here are better than in their home country.

“When you look at the 18-34 year-olds — those who are looking at the beginning of their career — they find that it’s definitely much worse here than what it was back at home,” says Mossop.

Mossop says they want to give the multicultural community a better sense of participation in mainstream society through providing an opportunity for people to voice what they think.
