How to ensure racialized employees don’t feel tokenized in the workplace

As protests continue around the world against anti-Black racism, companies are looking for more effective ways to create true diversity in the workplace. However, a major problem known as “tokenism” arises when the main goal is to only hit a certain quota in hiring, without creating equal opportunities for everyone. Global News spoke with individuals who experienced tokenism first-hand in the workplace. Meantime, equity and inclusion coach Sheliza Jamal explains some ways workplaces can ensure their employees of colour don’t feel like tokens in the workplace and the steps needed by employers to create a workplace with true diversity and inclusion.
