Alberta businesses split on changes to Temporary Foreign Worker Program

Alberta’s small- and medium-sized businesses agree the Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) Program is necessary, but are divided on the federal government’s recent overhaul, says a new survey released Tuesday by ATB Financial.

NRG Research Group randomly surveyed 300 businesses between Aug. 11-22.

72% of small- and mid-sized businesses agree the temporary foreign worker program is what is needed to deal with Alberta’s labour shortage.

18% Have used the program.

9% Currently use it.

38% Agree with changes to TFW program such as increasing fees, capping number of workers and limiting duration.

45% Disagree with changes.

48% Agree changes will be effective in stopping perceived abuse of the program.

34% Disagree changes will be effective in stopping perceived abuse of the program.

63% Agree it’s difficult to hire Albertans for lower-skilled jobs.

33% Agree program takes jobs away from Albertans.

58% Disagree program takes jobs away from Albertans.

40% Agree small- and mid-sized businesses use TFWs to hire lower-cost labour.

40% Disagree small- and mid-sized businesses use TFWs to hire lower-cost labour.
